Is Harker Heights a good place to buy near Fort Hood?
By Kyle Melvin · NMLS #1486450 · REV Mortgage · Licensed in Texas ·

Short answer
Harker Heights is the neighborhood most Fort Hood families with a mid-to-upper budget end up in: directly east of Killeen, a short drive to the East gate, newer and larger homes than Killeen's, and the Killeen ISD campuses families tend to prefer. It costs more than Killeen for the same square footage, and that premium is mostly schools and newer construction. For a VA buyer with full entitlement the price band is comfortably within a no-down-payment purchase, and Texas Vet pricing applies.
- Commute
- East gate, roughly 10–15 minutes; main gates through Killeen traffic
- Housing stock
- 1990s–2020s single-family, some custom; larger lots than Killeen
- Price band
- Above Killeen and Copperas Cove; below Salado
Harker Heights is a separate city, not a Killeen neighborhood, and it has spent thirty years being the place Fort Hood families move to when they can. It sits directly east of Killeen along US 190 — now I-14 — with the post's East gate a short drive north and the Killeen retail corridor immediately west. The population is heavily military and retired military, with a large share of senior NCOs, officers and civilians who have bought here on a second or third Fort Hood assignment.
Who lives here and why
The reasons are the same in every conversation: schools, newer houses, and quieter streets than the Killeen subdivisions closest to the gates. The Killeen ISD campuses that serve Harker Heights are the ones families ask for by name, and the housing — mostly 1990s to 2020s single-family on larger lots, with a stretch of custom homes off Knight's Way and FM 2410 — is a step up from Killeen's rental-heavy stock. The trade is price: the same square footage costs more here, and that premium is schools and construction age, not commute.
The commute
The East gate is the reason Harker Heights works. From most of the city it is ten to fifteen minutes north on FM 2410 or through the east side of Killeen. Getting to the main gates on the west side of the post means crossing Killeen on I-14, which is fine at most hours and slow at shift change. Soldiers assigned to units on the west side of the post sometimes choose Killeen or Copperas Cove for that reason.
Housing stock and what the appraiser sees
Harker Heights housing is newer than Killeen's on average, which means fewer of the roof and system findings that come up on the older north-Killeen stock. What still comes up: slab movement on Central Texas clay — the Fort Hood guide covers how foundation conditions are handled — hail-aged roofs, and deferred maintenance on former rentals. New construction on the city's edges brings the builder-VA-ID and warranty requirements. Few HOAs, and the established areas are not in municipal utility districts, so the tax bill is the county, city and school district and nothing more; confirm for any new subdivision.
The loan angle
A full-entitlement buyer here has no down payment and no VA loan limit; Harker Heights prices sit well inside what typical Fort Hood BAH carries — the BAH-to-payment calculator shows it for your grade. Many buyers here are on a second VA loan with the last house rented out, which is the second-tier calculation; at Bell County prices it almost always works without a down payment. Texas Vet pricing and, for a 100%-rated veteran, the total property tax exemption apply — see the Texas benefits page. And a Harker Heights house is the classic "keep it as a rental at the next PCS" property, because demand from the next rotation is structural; the renting-out page covers that decision.
