Meet Kyle
I'm Kyle Melvin, a mortgage loan officer who has spent the last 10 years helping more than 500 families navigate home financing.
I created Defend It. Own It. because service members deserve better than generic VA loan advice. When you receive orders, the real questions aren't just about rates—they're where to live, what your BAH can realistically afford, whether buying makes sense for this assignment, and how to use your VA benefit without getting bad guidance.
My job is to give you clear answers and an honest strategy. Sometimes that means buying. Sometimes renting is the smarter move. Either way, you'll understand your options, the numbers behind them, and what to expect before you make a decision.
I live in Southern California with my family, and when I'm not working with buyers, I'm usually spending time with my son Asher, our Goldendoodle Maverick, or convincing myself I still have time for the gym and a round of golf.

- A plan before you PCS. Kyle helps you understand your buying power, likely payment, and timeline before you start touring homes—so you know what is realistic at your next duty station.
- The real payment, not the list price. Property taxes, Mello-Roos, metro districts, CDD fees, and insurance are considered before you write an offer—not discovered at closing.
- Entitlement math done first. Keeping your current home as a rental? Your remaining entitlement gets calculated before you look at listings, because it can determine how much you can buy with no down payment.
- Honest about renting. A short or uncertain tour can make renting the smarter move. If it does, Kyle will tell you—a quick resale often leaves too little time to recover the costs of buying.
- Actually reachable. Military schedules don't follow standard office hours. When a question, listing, or offer needs attention, you can reach the loan officer handling your loan.
