Where do you get real Mayport shrimp, and what's the difference between living at the Beaches and living on the NAS Jax side?

Short answer
"Mayport shrimp" is the local brand — wild-caught off the St. Johns River mouth, sweeter than farmed — and Folio Weekly's 2026 investigation found that a lot of menus using the words aren't serving it. The ones that are sit in Mayport Village and the Beaches, ten minutes from Naval Station Mayport and an hour's round trip from NAS Jacksonville; which is the whole housing question at Jax: the Beaches side is the pretty side with the small commute to Mayport; Mandarin and Orange Park are the affordable side with the small commute to NAS Jax. Nobody gets both.
Mayport Village — where the boats come in
Safe Harbor Seafood Market & Restaurant. Boat-to-plate; buy it raw at the counter or eat it fried on the deck over the docks. Singleton's Seafood Shack. Since 1969, plywood and paper plates, grilled Mayport shrimp on skewers; Folio confirmed the shrimp is what it says. A.J.'s Seafood. The other confirmed-genuine one on Folio's list.
Live here: Mayport Village itself is a few blocks of fish camps and the ferry; the housing is next door in Atlantic Beach & Neptune Beach — 1950s–90s beach cottages and ranches on the sand side of A1A, walkable town centers, Duval's best-regarded elementary schools, five to ten minutes to the Mayport gate. Neptune Beach and Jax Beach
North Beach Fish Camp — Neptune Beach. The sit-down version, at the Beaches Town Center. Sliders Oyster Bar — Neptune Beach. Oysters and shrimp a block from the sand. Voodoo Brewing Co. Beer first, but Folio confirmed the shrimp is real.

Avondale and Riverside — the in-between
Restaurant Orsay — Avondale. The white-tablecloth answer, Mayport shrimp on the menu since it opened. Avondale and Riverside are the historic riverfront neighborhoods between the two bases: 20 minutes to NAS Jax, 30–35 to Mayport, 1910s–30s bungalows and brick. No guide slug yet; note for the build.
Mandarin and Orange Park — the NAS Jax side
Nothing on the shrimp lists is on the Westside or in Clay County, and we won't pretend otherwise. The shrimp is a Saturday drive across the Buckman. What's true: this is where NAS Jax families buy, because the gate is 10–15 minutes and a three-bedroom costs what a beach cottage's lot does.
Live here: Mandarin — 1970s–90s subdivisions under live oaks along the St. Johns, Mandarin's schools, 15 minutes to NAS Jax up San Jose Boulevard. Orange Park & Fleming Island — Clay County, its own school district, 1980s–2020s tracts, 10–20 minutes to the gate on 17, and the price band that made it the Navy's default address at Jax.
Why this is a housing article
Jacksonville is two duty stations 40 minutes apart with a river in between, and the shrimp is on one side. If your orders say Mayport, the Beaches are worth the stretch and Singleton's is your Friday. If they say NAS Jax, Mandarin and Orange Park are the right answer and the shrimp is what you do on the weekend. Run the payment for both on the BAH-to-payment tool.
